Male Mahadeshwara Hills (MM Hills), located in the Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka, is a significant pilgrimage and tourist destination.

The hills are named after Lord Male Mahadeshwara, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, who is worshipped at the ancient temple situated at the hilltop.

The temple draws thousands of devotees annually, especially during festivals like Mahashivaratri.

The hills, standing at an elevation of about 914 meters (3,000 feet), are surrounded by dense forests and wildlife, forming part of the Eastern Ghats.

The region is rich in biodiversity, with several species of flora and fauna, including elephants, leopards, and rare birds. The forested landscape also makes MM Hills popular among nature enthusiasts and trekkers.

MM Hills is closely linked to Karnataka’s cultural and spiritual history, with references to the hills in ancient folklore and local legends. According to one legend, Saint Mahadeshwara performed penance here, making it a sacred space.

In addition to being a pilgrimage site, MM Hills serves as an entry point to the Biligirirangana Hills (BR Hills) and the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy scenic views, trekking trails, and visits to nearby waterfalls, such as Gaganachukki and Barachukki.

Efforts are made to conserve the natural environment, but the region has faced challenges, including wildlife poaching and conflicts between humans and animals due to habitat encroachment.
